Black Student Matriculation (Prospective Student Campaign)

For general questions about this campaign, please e-mail us at blackmatric@inmanpagecouncil.com.

The IPC President, Richard Gray '85, had the opportunity to share a summary of preliminary recommendations with Brown's Diversity Advisory Council's subcommittee focused on African-American enrollment trends at Brown.  The recommendations were based on survey questions that the alumni callers asked the prospective students.

VOLUNTEER TOOLKIT

Note: It is not necessary for alumni to answer students' specific questions related to Admissions and/or Financial Aid.  The focus is to have the alum speak about their personal experiences while at Brown and to encourage the student to choose Brown.  Please review the guidelines below for instructions in completing the calls and helpful facts and figures about Brown.

ISSUE OF CONCERN

  • The number of black students admitted has increased but the number of black matriculating students (those that have accepted the offer of admission) has decreased drastically.
  • Two decades ago, black students were the largest minority student population on campus.  Today black students are the smallest minority population (surpassed by the Asian and Latino student populations).
  • Admission yield in 2008 was 38% for black students compared to 48% for black students in 2006.
  • Admission yield in 2008 was 60% for all students, significantly higher than the percentage for black students only.

 GOAL

  • Increase the number of black students matriculating at Brown. In addition, this campaign will communicate to current and prospective students the history of the black presence on campus and the importance of having an active, diverse black student community at Brown University.
  • This is intended to be an annual campaign that IPC coordinates each year.

 PLAN OF ACTION

  • The Brown Admissions Office will provide a contact list of admitted students to IPC at the beginning of April 2009.
  • Approximately 300 black students are admitted each year; the contact list of students will be divided among IPC alumni by region.  The phone calls and e-mails to prospective students will be made over the 4 week decision period (April 1 to May 1).
  • Each regional chapter will designate chapter leads to coordinate the process for their local area.
  • Coordination of efforts for regions without a local chapter will be led by the national IPC organization.
  • All alumni are encouraged to participate in the campaign, regardless of their class year or geographic location.
  • Current Brown students are also encouraged to join this campaign and coordinate the effort on campus.
  • Regional events will be planned to give prospective students an opportunity to meet and interact with alumni.
